I usually don't do reviews of stuff that comes out in the cinema, however this is a special case.

When I heard that after 10 years of waiting after final wars that godzilla was coming back to the main screen I didnt know what to think, in fact I had no opinion at the time when it was announced. Soon the first trailer was released onto the internet. and tbh, i felt like a kid again watching the original 1954 film, and then I found out who was directing it Garth Edwards… sigh, i did not like Monsters at all really, but he did say he was a dedicated godzilla fan so I though, you know, I wont shoot this movie down yet before its out, ill give it a chance.

So I went to see Godzilla today, the 2014 american reboot of the Japanese monster movie of the same name, and this is what i think: As a fan of the original Japanese Godzilla films, who collected the games, the comic books and the toys as a kid, i can safely say that the reboot was a real disappointment, ill say it, the movie was shit and so was the other american one and both could of been much better and fun.

Firstly, the lack of Godzilla in the film; granted in the original movie you didn’t see the monster alot, it built up the tension not knowing when Gojira was going to appear or not, and when he did it was worth the wait, in the remake however whenever he appears it quickly cuts back to what the human characters and usually tends to forget about the giant monster that just appeared, I call this transformers syndrome- where the film pays more attention to the humans rather than the giant robots, or in this case Godzilla. Even then Godzilla is not the main star of the movie, its the MUTOs. The vast majority of the of the monster shots were of the other monsters rather than the main monster itself. Sure Godzilla gets more screen time near the end of the movie, but thats the end of the movie, Godzilla should of been the main focus to begin with, not the humans, not the other monsters.

Speaking of the humans, again there’s too much screen time for them. Yes, you need a human element in theses types of films to show the struggle these people have to face but again these scenes drag on for too long. Also with the exception of Brian Cranstons 20 minutes of fame in the movie, the rest of the actors were dull, boring and werent really that interesting, there is more enjoyment out of the bad english dubs of the japanese films than these wooden actors here. Also they fire guns at the monsters, but why? I know Godzilla and other monsters in the films are almost invincible to things such as tanks or planes but why couldn’t they send them in at least, surley theyd of had a better chance on taking the monsters on with them rather than tiny bullets from assault rifles and titting about carring nukes all over the place when they already established it attracts the Mutos.

Thirdly, the plot was boring. It tried its best to keep with godzillas roots being serious and all, yet it just wasn’t interesting enough, it maybe the first time when watching a movie in the cinema that I nearly fell asleep. Films like the original godzilla and more recently the dark knight succeed at a serious story while still keeping at the pace that doesnt make you feel like its dragging on useless jar gen and boring characters.

I did like some parts, but it is minor. I thought the scenes where the monsters were fighting were great and so was the special effects, being interested in 3d animation after all this was great, and another thing i liked was a sly reference to mothra, but thats it.

To end this sort of review, ill say once again that I did not like it, it could of been the perfect opportunity to finally give the Godzilla series more world wide recognition, especially here in scotland where the only way to buy any of the godzilla films (excluding the original) is to import them from the US. If anything, films like pacific rim felt more like a godzilla film that godzilla itself. But at the end of the day, this was my opinion as a fan who was expecting better, if you like the movie, thats fine, its just that I myself personally wish it could of been better, but on the bright side, if any other good this film did is that it makes me want to watch the original films again, which i shall do when I have the time.
